Way To Embarrass Arizona, @GovBrewer
Today, during President Obama’s visit to Arizona, reporters say the Governor and he exchanged some “tense words”. The AP snapped this photo: I can almost here her say “Now you listen to me, boy!” Way to embarrass the entire state of Arizona, Governor GED. … Read entire article »
Burger King Bringing Obesity To Your Door
Oy, are we really so lazy a nation that now going through a drive-thru for fast food is an inconvenience? Burger King thinks so. Burger King (BKC), trying to regain its place as the nation’s second largest fast-food chain, is trying out home delivery in an effort to boost sales. This is just one of a number of unexpected experiments going on right now. Chains usually try discounts and other moves at this time of year to counter a seasonal sales slump. According to the company website, deliveries cost $2, and there is a minimum order of $8 to $10, depending on the market. Customers can order online or by phone. The restaurant is delivering meals such as 40-piece Chicken Tenders and two bottled drinks for $10.99 and four large sandwich combos for $23.99. … Read entire article »

Joel Convinced Me – Don’t “Go Dark”, Go #Misbehavin Over SOPA
This morning, I had planned to take HT dark for 24 hours in protest of SOPA and PIPA, the corporate “anti-piracy” internet legislation winding its way through Congress. While I agree that piracy is an issue, I believe these two bills are draconian in nature, as they allow corporations and the government to force ISPs to censor or even completely remove websites from the internet. There are better ways to combat piracy. From the EFF: Big media and its allies in Congress are billing the Internet blacklist legislation as a new way to battle online infringement. But innovation and free speech advocates know that this initiative will do little to stop infringement online. What it will do is compromise Internet security, inhibit online expression, and slow growth in the technology sector. As drafted, the legislation … Read entire article »
AZ Senator @RichCrandall | Let Them Eat…..Nothing
A Senate panel led by an East Valley lawmaker agreed Tuesday to let schools opt out of the federal program to offer free and reduced-price lunches for needy students. Sen. Rich Crandall, R-Mesa, said the state should not be imposing these mandates on public schools. He said the decision whether to participate in the National School Lunch Program – and deal with the various restrictions – is best left to local school officials. “So who gets hurt the worst under this mandate is the middle income; people who don’t qualify for free and reduced-price lunch are just above it,” he said. – Via MSNBC Of course, Crandall says schools could opt-out and still continue to offer the program…. just at the district taxpayer’s expense. Here’s the part that really chaps my hide. Loredo suggested that … Read entire article »
Focus On The Family – Protecting Newborns Isn’t Pro-Life
When is being pro-life not being pro-life? When one supports environmental restrictions on the amount of mercury newborns are exposed to. Like David Barton, who has no academic training as a historian but is the Religious Right’s point person on American history, Calvin Beinser of the Cornwall Alliance has no scientific credentials but has become the go-to person for right-wing activists on questions of science, particularly climate change. While he lacks any credentials what Beisner does have is close ties to organizations financed by the energy industry and a history of attacking scientists, spreading misinformation, and fueling fears that the environmental movement is a pagan plot to destroy Christianity and kill “about 95% of the human race.” Energy industry apologist Calvin Beisner of the Cornwall Alliance appeared on Janet Parshall’s radio show yesterday to once again do the bidding of polluters. As we’ve reported in The Green … Read entire article »
Does Science Make Belief In God Obsolete?
I recently found the website for the John Templeton Foundation and their “Big Question” essay series through a friend of mine’s tweet. The big question he linked to was “Does Science Make Belief in God Obsolete?” There are a few short essays that run the gamut from yes to no to yes… if and no… but. My answer? No. Science is simply the toolbox we use to understand and, in some instances, control the world around us. It helps us to explain the world, yet it cannot, and did not, create the world. Dear @ThePublicEditor Of The New York Times
I must have read your column titled “Should The Times Be a Truth Vigilante?” three or four dozen times today and only one thought comes to mind. How far has the craft of journalism fallen that you actually have to ask this question? Isn’t that the point of the 4th estate, to be the “truth tellers” in American society so that the public can be educated on the issues affecting them and the country in general? You ask in your article: I’m looking for reader input on whether and when New York Times news reporters should challenge “facts” that are asserted by newsmakers they write about. [snip] Is that the prevailing view? And if so, how can The Times do this in a way that is objective and fair? Is it possible to be objective and … Read entire article »
Pat Buchanan – The Gays Are Out To Get Me
Oh dear lord. Pat Buchanan‘s history of racism and bigotry is well known, so no need to dig into history here. The recent kerfuffle all came about when MSNBC put him on leave after the release of his latest book, “Suicide of a Superpower”, which laments the fall of “white America”, the lessening influence of peoples of European descent, and the rising influence of minorities in America. What else would you expect from a book with a chapter titled “The End Of White America”? Well, being one not well known for keeping his mouth shut, Buchanan appeared on the Sean Hannity comedy news hour and, when asked about being fired, placed the blame squarely on “militant gays, people of color, and Van Jones“. “Look, for a long period of time the hard left, militant gay … Read entire article »
