James Dobson Is The New Pat Robertson

The absolute theological idiocy that comes from the mouths of people like Dobson makes me……sad. Honestly, it sounds like he’s campaigning to be the new Pat Robertson. In video released Tuesday morning from a secret religious right-wing event titled “One Nation Under God,” Focus on the Family founder James Dobson warned Americans that if they don’t vote right-wing in 2012, they’ll be in “serious trouble” with God. “I am most concerned about the dift away from Christian principles,” Dobson said at the media embargoed event held in late October. “Are we going to continue to honor God with the holy living that he continues to prescribe to us? If we don’t, we are in serious trouble. And right now, I think we are.” The controversial evangelist added: “I happen to see this particular election … Read entire article »

Biblical Economics – Deuteronomy 15 And Giving To The Poor

If you Google “Biblical Economics“, you’ll see a plethora of links that make the claim that biblical economics mandates free market capitalism.  While, in previous posts, I have explained why that is partially true, to say that the Bible mandates free market capitalism is, well, poor biblical scholarship. Now, almost everybody knows the story of the rich young ruler, where Jesus tells him to sell all his possessions and give the money to the poor. Free Marketers often look to this verse to prove their point that charity is a personal choice, that it’s not the government’s job to provide for society. I say they are wrong. In the OT, God gives commands to his people, those that would become the nation of Israel, on what He expected their economic system to be. … Read entire article »

Distractions, Boundaries, And Living In Tension

This weekend, our cohort discussed a number of items, including ministering to the mentally ill and the report of the child with CP being asked to leave Easter Service at a church in NC for being a “distraction”. Both sides of the ‘distraction’ issue were discussed, in depth, with reasonable points both pro and con being made. The conversation led to the inevitable question of “How does one balance bearing each other’s burdens, denying oneself, and finding rest?” It’s a tough question. Life is full of distractions, demands on our time, and the occasional ‘energy vampire’.  As part of our Christian walk, we look beyond ourselves to serve those who need us, whether they be family, friends, strangers, or even our church family.  Eventually, though, we all hit the wall where we’re exhausted mentally, … Read entire article »

Unorthodoxically Orthodox – Part I

A few months ago, me and some friends were discussing our view of scripture and how, if applicable, it has changed over time.  About 3 weeks ago, Craig suggested that the conversation be opened up to what our own personal theology is and how it has developed. I have been thinking about this very thing over and over and, quite honestly, have come to this conclusion. I am, for the most part, am unorthodoxically orthodox….or maybe I’m heterodox.  One thing is for sure, I’m a paradox. I grew up Roman Catholic, making it all the way through Confirmation, then wandered into agnosticism, Taoism, atheism, non-denominational evangelicalism, and now…. I’m not entirely sure. For the most part, I identify with the Emergent movement….yet, I don’t.  The more I read, the more I realize I’m sort … Read entire article »

I Pray To Allah, And So Do You

Yes, that’s right, you read correctly. When I talk to God, I talk to Allah. If you’re a Christian, then so do you. I also talk with Deiu, Dios, Khudah, Gott, Shen, Tian Zhu, Dumnezeu, Dievas, Zot, Աստված, Бог, Bóg, Thiên Chúa, 神, Mungu, etc., etc. The other day, on my wife’s Facebook, there was a discussion about Osama bin Laden and John Piper‘s *ahem* theological take on it.  Somewhere in the discussion a commenter said the following: My mind is perfectly clear that Jehovah God is the One true God. Allah is a made up god by the false prophet Mohammad Of course, I had to ask him, putting theological differences between Christianity and Islam aside, how he could demean the faith of millions of Arabic Christians and belittle the Arabic translation of scripture.  To … Read entire article »

Barna Research – Six Themes Emerge In 2010

I honestly dig Barna’s Research Group.  They are constantly polling just about anything and everything in the Church and, for the most part, are usually right on the money.  A couple of weeks ago, they released a story on the Six Megathemes in 2010.  Of these six, I can honestly say none came as a surprise. Change usually happens slowly in the Church. But a review of the past year’s research conducted by the Barna Group provides a time-lapse portrayal of how the religious environment in the U.S. is morphing into something new. 1. The Christian Church is becoming less theologically literate. 2. Christians are becoming more ingrown and less outreach-oriented. 3. Growing numbers of people are less interested in spiritual principles and more desirous of learning pragmatic solutions for … Read entire article »

Love Your Oppressor

Image by BottleLeaf via Flickr A little over 2,000 years ago, in a land far, far away, a child was born to a people under occupation by an oppressive foreign government.  The birth of this child would change the world and turn the power structure on its head.  This child, an infant, was so threatening to those in power that the ruler decreed that all male children under two were to be killed. When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. – Matthew 2:16 This child would be persecuted, hated, and eventually … Read entire article »

Apophatic Theology: Does Atheism Reject Far Too Little?

In the latest edition of Religion Dispatches, Paul Wallace writes an excellent essay on Atheism and apophatic theology.  In it, Wallace claims that atheists reject far too little, instead settling for rejecting a “kind of ridiculous super-object in the sky”, a position that is far too simplistic. In this way, this category of atheists (Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens, etc.) are simply the mirror image of the theology they so vociferously refute.  In simpler terms, they are the “does not” that compliments the “does too” of theological fundamentalism. This is not, by far, a new idea.  Aristotle, in On Interpretation, wrote “Affirmations and their corresponding negations are one in the same knowledge”. Wallace goes beyond affirmation and negation into second-order negation, or inverting the inversion.  Why is this important? The third level is the most difficult … Read entire article »

Unity Or Uniformity?

“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. – John 17:20-21 In John 17, Jesus is seen praying for unity within those who believe in him.  Over and over he prays for unity, that all who believe be united as one.  Some today look at the over 38,000 Christian denominations and say that we, as the “big C” Church have failed. I disagree. Jesus prayed for unity, not uniformity.  Some of my fellow theogeeks may disagree with … Read entire article »
