Process Theology, Cornhole, And Homebrew
Yep. I’m off to California, starting Tuesday, for a few days to attend the Emergent Village Theological Conversation on Process Theology. It’s a new, to me, theological position, one that I can see some of the plusses and minuses in. I’m definitely looking forward to learning more over the next few days and getting to pick Bruce Epperly‘s brain a little. I’ve been reading his book to study up for this conference, so it’ll be an experience to be able to interact with him a bit. I’m also pretty stoked to hear Julie Clawson. Thanks to my friend Stuart for posting this earlier. HomebrewedTheology is no fan of Mark Driscoll‘s overly-masculine, misogynistic, hyper-sexualized version of Christianity. That much should be plainly obvious. He’s been taken to task by HT and numerous other bloggers over the past couple years, yet he continues to go out of his way to offend anyone who doesn’t meet his definition of a “manly man”. In an interview in Christian Today, he’s decided that his brand of Manianity is exactly what the UK needs. He’s loved and loathed for his tough talk on the church in the 21st century, and this time he’s taking aim at Britain. No, Newt Gingrich Is Not Like King David
Yes, the ridiculous, bordering on asinine, comparisons of Newt Gingrich to King David are making the rounds in conservative Evangelical circles. This isn’t by accident, my friends, it is by design. My good friend Becky Garrison, author of one of my favoritest books ever – Jesus Died For This?, gives the skinny on the behind the scenes machinations behind this ridiculous nonsense in her latest piece for The Guardian. The ingenious solution his handlers have come up with is to compare him to King David. Radio host Steve Deace categorised Gingrich and King David as “two extraordinary men gifted by God, whose lives include very high highs and very low lows”. School Prayer Isn’t Banned, So Quit Saying That!
Rick Perry‘s latest web ad “Strong” has seemingly set the interwebs ablaze, and not in a good way. As of this writing, the “dislikes” of the video on YouTube outnumber the “likes” by ~ 231,000 to 5,000. Yes, that’s a ratio of ~46:1. Aside from the bigoted, homophobic statement about gays in military being something “wrong” with this country, his belief that there is a “War on Religion” is equal in, well, idiocy. David Henson does an excellent take-down of this statement, as does Joel at Unsettled Christianity. Yet there is one thing I feel compelled to point out, and I want to address this to those conservative Christians that occasionally swing by HT. *ahem* Rick Perry is lying to you. Period. Kentucky Church Bans Interracial Couples
Yes, you read that right and no, this isn’t the early 20th Century. A Baptist church in Pike County has adopted a resolution that forbids interracial couples from being members or ‘being used in worship’. That second part comes as a result of how this whole thing got started. A small Pike County church has voted not to accept interracial couples as members or let them take part in some worship activities. Harville said his daughter Stella Harville, who is pursuing a master’s degree in optical engineering at a school in Indiana, brought her fiancé, Ticha Chikuni, to church in June and played the piano as he sang. Oh sweet Jesus. Straight from the Houston Chronicle. “Survivor” producer Mark Burnett is teaming up with Joel Osteen for a primetime network show in 2012, TMZ has learned. Burnett tells TMZ, the premise of the show is that ordinary people will give up several days or longer to go on a mission with Joel Osteen, one of the most popular pastors in the world. All of the missions will be in the confines of US soil to “start fixing things.” Now, on the surface that seems ok……wait for it……….. “We do these projects without the cameras rolling,” said Iloff. “But Jesus said, ‘Let your light shine.
