Jefferson’s First Draft – Subjects vs. Citizens
Preservation scientists at the Library of Congress have discovered that Thomas Jefferson, even in the act of declaring independence from England, had trouble breaking free from monarchial rule. In an early draft of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson wrote the word “subjects,” when he referred to the American public. He then erased that word and replaced it with “citizens,” a term he used frequently throughout the final draft. – AP via TPM … Read entire article »
What’s killing the American Church, and should we care?
I stand in two very different worlds. I have one foot firmly planted in the traditional, or institutional, church (IC), and my other foot planted firmly in the emergent church (EC). It is definitely an interesting place to stand, and one that is not for the feint of heart. There are times when I can see how the two work in concert with each other, and there’s times where I clearly see the discord between the two. I’ve gone through my own epic faith journey over the last several years, most notably the last 5. In this time I’ve learned to appreciate what the IC brings to the table, and also to see where it falls short. I’ve also come to realize that although the IC is, for many Christians, a … Read entire article »

Misplaced Priorities
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last 24 hours, Michael Jackson passed away from a Demerol induced heart attack yesterday at the age of 50. From what I gather on Twitter and other social media, there has been an astoundingly stupid amount of wailing and gnashing of teeth over the death of one man. While I agree it’s a tragedy, I believe that the last 24 hours only spotlight how misplaced our priorities are as a society. My good friend Brian Kruckenberg asked the question on his blog “Michael Jackson got 50. How many will we get?” This is an excellent question. In his post he asks: But, most of you reading this have the same question I do. And, that is as big as his life was… … Read entire article »
The Unholy Alliance of Dominionists and American Politics
Those of you who read my blog know that I am no fan of Dominionism, particularly when it comes to their stated goal of creating a new American Theocracy. From Weyrich, the geneaology can be traced directly to elements within today’s Republican party, including members of the Bush Administration and recent VP Candidate Sarah Palin. I’ve been doing research, here and there, on this movement, its history, and how it came to be such an influential force in American Politics. While I am still getting my ducks in a row, here’s a teaser: Transcript:“Now many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome — good government. They want everybody to vote. I don’t want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have … Read entire article »
Evangelicals for Torture
From CNN: More than half of people who attend services at least once a week — 54 percent — said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is “often” or “sometimes” justified. Only 42 percent of people who “seldom or never” go to services agreed, according the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. White evangelical Protestants were the religious group most likely to say torture is often or sometimes justified — more than 6 in 10 supported it. Which, of course, begs the question….. “Who Would Jesus Torture?” *On edit – While I am 100% morally opposed to torture, whether you define it as waterboarding, stress positions, or being put in a locked room with the Jonas Brothers blaring 24 hours a day, that’s not the major point … Read entire article »
NBC: OBAMA ELECTED 44TH PRESIDENT
Barack Obama, a 47-year-old first-term senator from Illinois, shattered more than 200 years of history Tuesday night by winning election as the first African-American president in the history of the United States, according to projections by NBC News. Obama reached the 270 electoral votes he needed for election at 11 p.m. ET, when NBC News projected that he would win California, Washington and Oregon. Wow. Just wow.
