Dear the Rest Of The World:

You may have noticed that a segment of America’s Republican Party demographic has gone completely bat*$!t insane.  They’ve lost all ability to reason, to discern, to understand nuance, and to see the world any other way aside from the childlike “me right, you wrong”.  It wasn’t always this way.  There once was a time when the GOP was filled with principled, honorable men and women whom one could disagree with, yet still come to a consensus/compromise in order to do what’s best for the country and, in some cases, the rest of the world.

Sadly, those days seem to be long gone.

So, to the rest of the world, I’d like to apologize for today’s GOP.

I’d like to apologize for their full throated defenses of Islamophobia and religious bigotry disguised as “defending free speech“.

I’d like to apologize for their misguided belief that admitting to, and apologizing for, mistakes one has made means you’re weak.

You see, today’s GOP is like the petulant child who, if you don’t like his rules, will gladly take his ball and go home.

They’ll gladly let your people starve, let them suffer after a natural disaster, and even let them languish in bloodshed and misery if they view your government(s) as ‘the enemy”.

These people don’t represent what is best about the United States…

…they represent what is worst about the US.

They represent a segment of the population that is ideologically rigid, blindly nationalistic, bigoted and racist.

They’re intellectually incurious and intellectually dishonest at the same time, believing anything and everything that supports their worldview whether it’s true or not.

They don’t believe in facts.

They’re proud of their staunch anti-intellectualism, most recently articulated by Rick Santorum‘s “smart people will never be on our side“.

They are the party of the “angry white male“.

They are Idiot America, turning abject stupidity into a virtue.

So, on behalf of the rest of the United States, I’d like to apologize for them.

Please don’t hate us because the crazies have managed to come to power by playing to people’s basest fears.  We’ll fix that….. we promise.
