John MacArthur – Middle East Protests Violate Scripture

Yes, you read right.  John MacArthur, dispensationalist, hyper-Calvinist, and virulent anti-Catholic believes that the pro-democracy protests in the Middle East directly contradict scripture.

But from a biblical perspective, MacArthur maintained that the protesters are in violation of the biblical command to “submit to the powers that be because they’re ordained of God.”

“I would have wished the American government, which has a history of Christianity, would have risen up and said ‘this is wrong, this is forbidden for people to do this, this is intolerable,” he said.

Yes.  John says that the American government, born of rebellion itself, should stand up and tell the people of the Middle East that they should stop fighting for human rights, dignity, and freedom.

“After all, who said democracy’s the best form of government?” he said. “No matter what the form of government is, the Bible doesn’t advocate anything but a theocracy. Any form of government is going to self destruct because you’re dealing with corrupt people, sinful people.”

John, if you truly held to what you believe, that these protests/rebellions are forbidden by Romans 13, then you’d obviously advocate returning the United States to Britain.

After all… rebellion is un-biblical, right?

This is what comes of reading too much Calvin. Following the theology of a man who used torture and murder to ensure doctrinal compliance is bound to have this sort of effect. Stay away from the Institutes, Calvinism is one of the worst things ever set loose upon the church.

MacArthur is on his own here. He can go back to Britain and pledge allegiance to the royal crown. Of course, once he gets there wasn’t that land once under Roman rule? Hmmm, this could be problematic.

    Yeah, I agree.

I think his theologically lazy interpretation of Romans 13 is based in a belief that Arab countries, not being “Christian”, aren’t capable of self-governance with a western flair. The more the protests spread, the more I’m seeing this from American Christians. They believe that forcing democracy (i.e. Iraq) is more noble and more real than a democratic movement born organically by the people.

    I don’t get it, Brian, I really don’t.
