Farewell @PastorMark

The time has come for you to give up the reins.  Despite your promise to be more cognizant of the words you use after your “effeminate worship leaderFacebook status, you continue to be as obnoxious and classless as ever.  You continue to belittle anyone who doesn’t agree with your hyper-masculine brand of …well, can’t really call it Christianity anymore.

After mocking the entire Christian society within the UK, you appeared on Unbelievable, British radio show and took the opportunity to belittle, insult, and demean the host and his wife.

You see, the host’s wife is the pastor of their church.  Something which evidently gets under your skin.

Brierley: Well we’re not a huge church, unlike yours, but I’d say there’s two or three probably in the last year who certainly, yah, I’d say have come to Christ in a pretty meaningful way.

Driscoll: Okay and in the church, what percentage is young men, single men?

Brierley: It’s difficult to say off the top of my head, but I’ll freely say it’s certainly not a big percentage, no.

Driscoll: Kay, and are you okay with that? Do you think that’s the best way to go?

Brierley: No, but can it be so easily put down to the fact that the church is being run by a woman? I mean, is that …

Driscoll: Yup. Yup. You look at your results, you look at my results, and you look at the variable that’s most obvious.

Translation – I’m a better pastor because I’m a man.

Then, you wouldn’t hear anything about how it’s a different church culture than yours saying, and I quote, “This is where the excuses come, not the verses. This is where the excuses come, not the verses.”

The rest of the interview, quite honestly, disgusts me.  Calling the host a coward and telling him to “stop drinking decaf” is, to put it politely, unbecoming of a Pastor.

I don’t know what you’re pushing over at Mars Hill, but I can tell you this.  It sure isn’t Christ.

I like this post because it puts things in real “context,” like Driscoll attempted to do with his own blog, but what he really ended up doing was putting things in his “context.” But what I don’t like about all this is the fact that guys like Driscoll aren’t just allowed to continue preaching, but they’re not even challenged by the leaders around them. If my pastor had said the things Driscoll said, either no one would show up to church or someone else would be preaching the next Sunday.
I’m appalled by those who go to great lengths to defend Driscoll and his leadership because it doesn’t seem like they take a step back and evaluate whether or not Driscoll is actually promoting Christ – not just with his words, but with his tone and with his overall lifestyle.
I’m sorry, but I think the only person who has any authority to call someone a coward is Jesus Himself… and I highly doubt that He ever would.

I agree! The sad thing is Driscoll had been challenged by his church’s elders after the whole “effeminate worship leader” thing, and he made a public statement saying he’d be more careful about the things he said. Guess it didn’t take. He’s also responded to criticism about his book without grace and humility, saying that those who have criticisms “have issues of their own”, or words to that effect.

I pray that Driscoll learns the one thing from Christ he’s, to this point, ignored. Humility.
