Way To Embarrass Arizona, @GovBrewer
Today, during President Obama’s visit to Arizona, reporters say the Governor and he exchanged some “tense words”. The AP snapped this photo: I can almost here her say “Now you listen to me, boy!” Way to embarrass the entire state of Arizona, Governor GED. … Read entire article »
Joel Convinced Me – Don’t “Go Dark”, Go #Misbehavin Over SOPA
This morning, I had planned to take HT dark for 24 hours in protest of SOPA and PIPA, the corporate “anti-piracy” internet legislation winding its way through Congress. While I agree that piracy is an issue, I believe these two bills are draconian in nature, as they allow corporations and the government to force ISPs to censor or even completely remove websites from the internet. There are better ways to combat piracy. From the EFF: Big media and its allies in Congress are billing the Internet blacklist legislation as a new way to battle online infringement. But innovation and free speech advocates know that this initiative will do little to stop infringement online. What it will do is compromise Internet security, inhibit online expression, and slow growth in the technology sector. As drafted, the legislation … Read entire article »
AZ Senator @RichCrandall | Let Them Eat…..Nothing
A Senate panel led by an East Valley lawmaker agreed Tuesday to let schools opt out of the federal program to offer free and reduced-price lunches for needy students. Sen. Rich Crandall, R-Mesa, said the state should not be imposing these mandates on public schools. He said the decision whether to participate in the National School Lunch Program – and deal with the various restrictions – is best left to local school officials. “So who gets hurt the worst under this mandate is the middle income; people who don’t qualify for free and reduced-price lunch are just above it,” he said. – Via MSNBC Of course, Crandall says schools could opt-out and still continue to offer the program…. just at the district taxpayer’s expense. Here’s the part that really chaps my hide. Loredo suggested that … Read entire article »
Dear @ThePublicEditor Of The New York Times
I must have read your column titled “Should The Times Be a Truth Vigilante?” three or four dozen times today and only one thought comes to mind. How far has the craft of journalism fallen that you actually have to ask this question? Isn’t that the point of the 4th estate, to be the “truth tellers” in American society so that the public can be educated on the issues affecting them and the country in general? You ask in your article: I’m looking for reader input on whether and when New York Times news reporters should challenge “facts” that are asserted by newsmakers they write about. [snip] Is that the prevailing view? And if so, how can The Times do this in a way that is objective and fair? Is it possible to be objective and … Read entire article »
Pat Buchanan – The Gays Are Out To Get Me
Oh dear lord. Pat Buchanan‘s history of racism and bigotry is well known, so no need to dig into history here. The recent kerfuffle all came about when MSNBC put him on leave after the release of his latest book, “Suicide of a Superpower”, which laments the fall of “white America”, the lessening influence of peoples of European descent, and the rising influence of minorities in America. What else would you expect from a book with a chapter titled “The End Of White America”? Well, being one not well known for keeping his mouth shut, Buchanan appeared on the Sean Hannity comedy news hour and, when asked about being fired, placed the blame squarely on “militant gays, people of color, and Van Jones“. “Look, for a long period of time the hard left, militant gay … Read entire article »
A Tale Of Two Unjust Imprisonments | Guantanamo Vs. Iran
There’s been an interesting juxtaposition in the news over two unjust imprisonments lately involving the United States. In both cases, people were arrested and imprisoned on false charges. In both cases, the imprisoned are facing torture and even death. The differences? In one case, the prisoner is an American and in the other, the jailer is the United States. The other major difference is that in one case, the US fought to keep one imprisoned while fighting to free the other. In a story from the New York Times titled “My Guantanamo Nightmare”, Lakdahr Boumediene details his story of being unjustly taken from his work at the Red Crescent Society of the United Arab Emirates in Sarajevo and whisked away to the US detention center at Guantanamo Bay. There he was imprisoned for seven years, tortured, … Read entire article »
Socialist Party Says Obama Isn’t One Of Them
In this past weekend’s debates, Texas Governor Rick Perry went all in on his ‘Obama is a socialist’ meme, saying: “I make a very proud statement and a fact that we have a president that’s a socialist.” Lynn Lomibao, spokesperson for the Socialist Party had this to say in response: “The notion that Barack Obama is a socialist ranks among the greatest fairy tales in American society — right up there with the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and the idea that if you work hard enough your children will live a better life than you. Socialists know what Obama is: another corporate funded politician placed in the White House to protect the wealth and status of the 1 percent.” Now that should settle the debate. Broken Clocks And Ron Paul
I’ve been challenged, by my good friend, ex-roomie, and shipmate Mickey to take an honest look at Ron Paul and, in particular, Glenn Greenwald‘s piece that recently appeared in Salon. In discussing Paul with my wife, I’ve proposed that Paul doesn’t enjoy wide support, but simply picks up single issue voters (anti-war, pro-legalization, anti-government). My wife, on the other hand, had a better hypothesis. People in this country are sick and tired of the same old nonsense from Congress and are looking for “change”, and Paul is just different enough that people can support him and somehow ignore all the negatives because he articulates something different. On the surface, some of Paul’s positions sound pretty attractive, for example: End the war on drugs. End the war in Afghanistan and bring the troops home. End foreign aid. End … Read entire article »
