Out Of The Darkness – Part III

Image by sroemerm via Flickr “Did you just tell me to shut up, old man?” “Yes, yes I did.  That’s part of your problem.  You spend so much time talking, mostly talking to yourself, that you’ve never taken the time to listen.  You can miss so much when you’re focused inward.  Now, if you don’t mind, save your breath, we’ve got a ways to go.” David opened his mouth to say something, but decided against it.  The last thing he remembered, the last memory he should have had, was jumping from a bridge into the Cooper River.  Yet, here he was, in some strange place, walking behind some strange man who seemed to know plenty about David and seemed to enjoy giving him a hard time. The old man didn’t say much as they … Read entire article »

Out Of The Darkness – Part II

David opens his eyes and the sunlight nearly blinds him.  He sits up and rubs his eyes.  Looking around, confusion begins to set in. “What the…?  Why?  Where the hell am I?” From over to his left a voice answers him. “Phew!  That was a close one.  You gave us quite a scare.  We weren’t sure we were going to be able to get to you in time.” “Who are you?  Where are you?  More importantly, where am I?” An older gentleman steps out from behind some trees.  Though he can’t quite put his finger on it, the man seems oddly familiar; though he’s sure he’s never seen him before. The gentleman walks up to David, extends his hand and says “Get up… we’ve got plenty to talk about.” … Read entire article »

Out Of The Darkness – Part 1

He hits the water and quickly sinks beneath the murky surface.  The river’s chill nearly causes him to lose his breath, but only for a moment.  He opens his eyes, but the water is too cloudy to see anything aside from the greenish tint of the street lamps from the bridge above. As he heads toward the bottom, one thing stands out to him. Silence. Glorious silence. For far too long, the voices in his head have tormented him.  They tell him he’s no good, he’ll never succeed, and even that the world would be so much better if he’d never been born.  These are tough words for a man to hear and can be even tougher when there’s nobody to stand up for you. But that didn’t matter anymore. Those voices were finally silent, and … Read entire article »

A Different Kind Of Church

It’s a typical Arizona Sunday afternoon. It’s been hot, and since its monsoon season, it’s been humid, too. Today a bunch of people are gathering to celebrate the birthdays of two members of this eclectic group of what some would consider malcontents and heretics. In this group there are ex-Pentecostals, ex-Catholics, ex-seminarians, ex-pastors, and a recently ordained minister, among others. It truly is an eclectic group of people, of faiths, of backgrounds, yet there is an overall sense of love, of acceptance, of family in this group. As I sit in the swimming pool, looking around I can’t help but think that this is what church was really meant to be. Reading the scriptures, we see that church, as Jesus laid it out, wasn’t exclusively some sort of … Read entire article »

πίστις – An Introduction

Walk into any bookstore today and you’ll see row upon row of “Live Your Best Purpose Driven Life Now” type books.  Books that teach you how to be the best you you can be.  Books that tell you that God wants you to be rich, and here’s 7 easy steps to take your piece of God’s abundance.  Books that tell you how awful the world is and how your faith is under attack. This isn’t going to be one of those books. Thousands of years ago, a group of people escaped slavery and started a community that was radically different than what they had known for generations.  It was a community based on equality, on respect, on service, on mercy, on compassion, and on justice.  It was a community that ensured everyone … Read entire article »

πίστις – Eden Wasn’t Perfect

How many times have you heard people say things like: “If only things were like they were  back then, the world would be so much better.” Sounds great, right?  Life was simpler, people were nicer, yadda, yadda, yadda. Well, there’s a couple of things that are wrong with that: It implies that at some previous time things were, or at least very near, “perfect”. “Perfect” implies that nothing needs to change, therefore everything is stagnant. Your “perfect” may not be someone else’s “perfect”.  I don’t think you’d ever find a “perfect” that everyone would agree on. The only thing that is “perfect”, and thereby unchanging, is God Himself. Even from the very beginning, in the Garden, this world was not “perfect”.  In fact, “perfect” is not used at all in either creation story.  The word “good” is.  The … Read entire article »

πίστις – Living Christianity in 3D

Since being struck by a thunderbolt during the drive to Tallahassee, I realize its finally time to seriously put pen to paper and give birth to this book floating inside my head. Today is the unveiling of the outline of the book.  The title of this blog is the current (working) title of the book. That being said, here’s a quick insight to what I’m writing: Working Title: πίστις – Living Christianity in 3D  (I was going to use Faith in 3D, but it seems that’s a youth ministry event.) Chapter Synopses: Pop Christianity – In striving to be seen as relevant in our media driven culture, the big “C” church has, in many ways, begun to look more like MTV than Acts 2.  From pop stars to athletes to celebrity pastors, Christianity is in danger … Read entire article »
